Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Merely ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and overwhelm as I geared up to commence my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been somewhat shy and reserved, the thought of plunging into university life was intimidating. However, reflecting on my first academic year now, I recognize a journey rich with growth, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the primary obstacles I encountered early in this journey was forging friendships. It’s a common concern for many newcomers, and I was certainly no exception. On the day I settled into my accommodation—just days ahead of the term’s start—I spent the entire day within my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently assert that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, which all began with a few straightforward conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain. My most significant lesson? Take that initial leap. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and events crafted to help you engage with others. Above all, be authentic—Imperial is populated with a diverse array of individuals, and you’re sure to find your group.

Academically, the shift from A-levels to university constituted a considerable transition, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel like you’re lagging behind when witnessing others studying diligently or grasping concepts more rapidly. However, here’s what supported me: keeping in mind that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a topic, it’s likely others are as well. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to seek help has become one of the most essential skills I’ve acquired this year.

Regarding staff support, the assistance within the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors sincerely prioritize our success and welfare. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and remain receptive to feedback and dialogue. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my year group. This role allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved incredibly advantageous. Whether through student roles or simply reaching out, forming relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be incredibly impactful. Take full advantage of the support provided—you can never have too much.

In summary, this year has shown me that the nerves and apprehensions I felt before embarking on university were normal, albeit manageable. With backing from staff and fellow students, I’ve learned that I am never genuinely alone. I’ve also found ways to balance academic demands with enjoyment, even during high-stress periods like exams and deadlines.

Looking back, I take pride in how far I’ve progressed—and I’m eager for what lies ahead.
