Just a mere ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, doubt, and quite a bit of apprehension as I geared up to start my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been rather shy and introverted, plunging into university life seemed overwhelming. However, reflecting on my first academic year now, I see a path filled with development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the most significant and daunting challenges I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern you share. I distinctly recall spending my entire initial day within the student residence, cloistered in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself. Fast-forward to now, and I’m pleased to say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel akin to a second family. What shifted? I decided to embrace small talk, reaching out to others who were just as apprehensive as I was. My key takeaway? Take that plunge early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are ample ice-breakers and social gatherings available to help you connect. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse group of students, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
Another significant adaptation was the academic demands and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite substantial—and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or to measure your progress against others and feel inadequate. But here’s the reality: everyone is on a similar journey. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I acquired in my first year—reach out to your classmates, and don’t hesitate to approach the faculty.
Speaking of faculty, I can’t express enough praise for the teaching team within the Materials department. They are genuinely invested in our success and provide tremendous support. They recognize the hurdles students encounter and are always receptive to feedback. While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until further into the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. In the beginning, I took a chance and became a year well-being representative, which allowed me to cultivate connections with staff. That experience was immensely rewarding and fostered a greater sense of belonging. There are numerous avenues to engage with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can truly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Make the most of every available support system—there’s no such thing as too much help.
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the anxious feelings I harbored—before and throughout university—were largely unfounded. Thanks to the support of staff and fellow students, those anxieties became manageable. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance diligence with enjoyment, even during stressful periods like exams and deadlines.
