**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was enveloped in feelings of anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the road ahead. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been introverted, plunging into a new setting wasn’t precisely what I was accustomed to. Now, as I reflect on the academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what precisely did I gain from this experience, and what’s my current standing?
### Confronting the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was establishing friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar fears. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I’m pleased to say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversations with individuals who were equally anxious.
What was my takeaway from this? It’s essential to take that initial plunge at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a varied mix of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being suddenly immersed in this environment can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others engaged in their studies and feel as though you’re lagging. But here’s the reality: everyone shares this struggle. If you don’t grasp something, likely, others are having difficulties with it too. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This is possibly the most crucial lesson I took away from my first year.
### The Significance of Faculty Support
Speaking of faculty, the teaching staff in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students face. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s end, but I do wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the year’s beginning, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which proved to be remarkably beneficial. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with faculty members, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My chief lesson here? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support that’s offered to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt prior to, and during, university was largely misplaced. The support from both faculty and fellow students is always present to assist you through it. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to find a balance between enjoying myself and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
