Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt a whirlwind of nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my Materials Science and Engineering degree at Imperial. As someone who has always been quite introverted, jumping into university life felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize it as a time full of personal growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights has this initial year provided me, and where do I stand now?

One of the earliest and most daunting challenges was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might be feeling the same way. I recall spending my entire first day holed up in my room, too anxious to go out and meet new people. But today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most genuine friendships I’ve ever had—friends who truly feel like family. It all began with casual chats with others who were just as new and apprehensive as I was. The key takeaway? Take that initial leap. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connections. And above all, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

Another significant challenge involved adapting to the academic demands and complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to second-guess yourself when you observe others studying diligently and seemingly grasping everything. However, one comforting thought was that many others experience struggles as well. If you’re perplexed by something, it’s likely that your classmates are too. Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance—whether from your peers or the teaching staff. Developing the ability to seek help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department is exceptional. They truly wish to see students thrive and are always willing to listen to our concerns. I didn’t maximize the available pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had sought it out earlier. Early on, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members—a truly enriching experience. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion: take full advantage of the support provided. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was frequently unfounded—and that help is always within reach, whether through staff or other students. I’ve come to realize that I’m never genuinely alone, and that it’s entirely possible to relish the university experience, even in the midst of exam pressures and deadlines.
