**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I readied myself to embark on my studies in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial. Having always been somewhat shy and reserved, stepping into such a significant new phase of life felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I see a period filled with growth, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the foremost and most daunting challenges I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re on the verge of beginning university, this might be something that concerns you as well. I recall my first day in student accommodations, where I hid in my room, too apprehensive to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can affirmatively state that I’ve built some of the closest friendships of my life here — friendships that feel like a second family. It all commenced with brief conversations and realizing that everyone else shared the same feelings. The most significant takeaway? Take that leap early on. Even if you feel anxious, there are numerous ice-breakers and events crafted to help you connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic — with such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to find your tribe.
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university-level study was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel as though you’re lagging behind when you observe others diligently studying, but it’s crucial to keep in mind that everyone faces difficulties at some stage. If you’re perplexed or struggling, it’s likely that others are too. Seeking assistance — from peers, tutors, or lecturers — is one of the most vital competencies you can cultivate in your first year.
In terms of support, I cannot praise enough the team within the Materials department. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are consistently willing to listen to our concerns. While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a Year Wellbeing Representative, which provided me with the chance to collaborate closely with staff members — a truly valuable experience. Fostering connections with staff and leveraging the support systems offered can significantly enhance your university journey.
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the anxiety I encountered — both prior to and during university — was frequently unwarranted. There is ample support available, from both staff and fellow students, ensuring that you are never truly on your own. Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to strike a balance between diligent work and enjoyment, even amidst stressful periods such as exams and deadlines.
