Reflecting on October 2022, I recall experiencing a blend of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty while readying myself to embark on my Materials Science and Engineering journey at Imperial. Being someone who was previously shy and reserved, embracing such a substantial new chapter felt intimidating. However, after completing my first year, it’s clear how much I have evolved — academically, personally, and socially. This past year has been packed with challenges, opportunities for self-discovery, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current status?
One of the initial and most daunting challenges was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student, this might be one of your biggest concerns as well. I still vividly recall moving into my accommodation just days before the term commenced — I spent the entirety of the first day secluding myself in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to say I’ve developed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had, both within my academic program and throughout the university. Imperial has truly become a second family for me. What contributed to this? Taking gradual steps — initiating conversations, participating in events, and simply being authentic. There’s such a diverse community here that you’re sure to discover individuals you resonate with. My suggestion: take that leap early on. Even if you feel uncertain, there will be numerous chances to connect with others, and being genuine will always benefit you.
Another significant adjustment involved managing the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable — and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when witnessing others immersed in their studies. However, one key lesson I learned is that everyone encounters struggles at some point. If you find something challenging, it’s likely that others do too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance — whether from your peers, instructors, or support services. Reaching out is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
Regarding support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are always willing to listen to our experiences and concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. Initially, I took a step forward by becoming a Year Wellbeing Representative, which allowed me to forge strong connections with the staff — something I wholeheartedly recommend. There are countless opportunities to connect with those who educate and support you, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My top takeaway here: never hesitate to utilize the support available to you. It exists for a purpose.
Overall, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt — both pre-university and during my time there — was often unwarranted. With the right support and mindset, those fears can be surmounted. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to balance hard work with enjoyment, even during stressful periods like exams and deadlines.
