Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the cusp of starting my first year as a student in the Materials Science and Engineering program at Imperial. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights has this year given me, and where do I find myself today?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. Beginning university can feel daunting, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be among your greatest concerns as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation—just a few days prior to the official start of the term—I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both within my program and across the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial. And it all commenced with brief discussions with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was.
The foremost lesson? Take the plunge early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and options to meet people. And most critically, remain authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with individuals who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the course material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable transition from A-levels, and an even steeper ascent from the first term to the second. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying around you. However, one thing that aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it is likely that others are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to reach out for assistance is likely the most vital skill I acquired in my first year.
Regarding support, the staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us about any challenges we faced. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the end of the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I took a step forward by becoming a Year Wellbeing Representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members—a truly invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can have a significant impact. My recommendation? Take full advantage of the support provided—you can never have too much.
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings I experienced before and during university were frequently unfounded. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I discovered how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines while enjoying my university life.
