**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, immersing myself in university life felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments. But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the challenge of forging new friendships. If you are perusing this as a future student, this could be among your top worries as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation, I spent all day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Nevertheless, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest bonds I’ve ever experienced, both in my program and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all originated from brief conversations with others who were just as anxious as I was.
What was my takeaway from this? I realized that taking that first step is essential. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be myriad ice-breakers and activities intended to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, I recognized that being your authentic self is the best approach. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you are sure to find those who align with you.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more difficult. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and seemingly thriving. However, one thing that supported me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely others are grappling with it as well.
What is the key lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether you turn to your classmates or the teaching staff, reaching out for assistance is vital during your first year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the subject of faculty, the instructors and tutors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about our success and are fully cognizant of the obstacles we encounter. They keep avenues of communication open with us throughout the year and are always ready to heed our concerns. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had embraced it earlier.
At the year’s beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster better connections with the staff. Cultivating relationships with faculty is one of the most rewarding actions you can take. Numerous opportunities exist to interact with staff, and I highly endorse taking advantage of them. My primary takeaway? Don’t shy away from utilizing the support that is at your disposal. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
All in all, this year has shown me that the unease I felt before and during university was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I have learned that I’m never genuinely alone. More significantly, I discovered how to juggle the pressure of exams and deadlines while still engaging in enjoyment and fun.
