**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into the complexities of university life seemed intimidating. Now, as I reflect on my first year, I perceive a time of substantial personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insightful lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?
### Forging Friendships: An Intimidating Yet Fulfilling Endeavor
One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of beginning university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, it’s likely a concern you share as well. On my arrival day, just a few days prior to the official start of the term, I found myself sequestered in my room all day, too shy to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family within Imperial, all sparked by a few straightforward chats with others navigating similar experiences.
What has this taught me? I realized that taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t stress—there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with new people. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is paramount. With a plethora of diverse personalities throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Workload: A Steep Learning Journey
Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. There was certainly a distinct increase compared to A-levels, with an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding academic setting can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when you notice others studying and feel as though you are lagging behind.
What assisted me in navigating this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear, there’s a good chance others feel that way too. The most crucial lesson I learned during my inaugural year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out when you’re finding things tough; it can significantly impact your experience.
### Guidance from Faculty: An Essential Asset
Concerning faculty, the support from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about your success and understand the hurdles students confront. They show empathy and keep communication open all year long. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the tail end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took the initiative to serve as a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to engage with the faculty more closely, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are various methods to connect with faculty, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to take advantage of this. My primary takeaway from this experience is to utilize the support that is offered—you can never solicit too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Apprehensions and Embracing Campus Life
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that the anxiety I experienced before and throughout the university era was mostly unfounded. An abundance of support systems exists—both from faculty and fellow students—to assist you in navigating any difficulties. I’ve learned that I’m not truly alone, and I’ve gained insight into how to enjoy life while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
