**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted and cautious, diving into the unfamiliar was intimidating. However, as I reflect on the past academic year, I realize it has been a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences. But what have I actually gained, and what is my current situation?
### Building Friendships: Conquering the Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most anxiety-inducing components of commencing university was establishing friendships. If you’re a future student, this may be a concern for you already. I vividly recall my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of the term. I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture outside and engage with others.
Fast forward to now, and I can affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. These connections have become like a second family during my time at Imperial. All it took was a touch of casual conversation with individuals who were equally apprehensive. So, what have I gleaned? I learned that taking that initial step is essential. Even if you feel unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breakers and events aimed at fostering connections with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such an eclectic mix of people at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Load
Another major challenge was adapting to the demands and intricacies of the curriculum. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can undermine your confidence, especially when you see fellow students studying and feel inadequate in comparison.
What aided me in this regard was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are struggling too. The crucial point is to seek help. This may be the most vital lesson from my first year—don’t be shy about asking for support from both your peers and the faculty.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of faculty, I cannot emphasize enough how commendable the Materials department is. The instructors and support staff genuinely desire your success and are well aware of the trials students undergo. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to tackle any issues. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not seizing that opportunity sooner.
At the year’s outset, I took a leap and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to connect better with the faculty, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself. My primary lesson here is to capitalize on the support offered to you—there’s no such thing as excessive assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has illuminated for me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was mostly unfounded. An abundance of support is accessible from both faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never isolated, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between enjoying life and managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
