**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, stepping boldly into this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the foremost and most daunting challenges I encountered was the task of forming friendships. This tends to be one of the most nerve-racking elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be a concern for you as well. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve created some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all started with casual conversations with individuals in the same boat as me. What have I learned? Taking that first step is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events tailored to assist you in connecting with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a diverse array of people across your course and the university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

### Addressing the Academic Load

Another major challenge was managing the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and the leap from the first term to the second was particularly striking. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem. You may observe others studying and feel inadequate.

What aided me through this experience was the realization that everyone is encountering similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, it’s likely others are struggling with it as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek support. This might be the most crucial lesson I took away from my first year. Don’t shy away from asking for help from your classmates or the faculty.

### The Significance of Support and Engagement with Staff

On the topic of staff, the lecturers and tutors in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for your success and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year, addressing any issues we may face. I didn’t fully utilize the supportive resources available until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect more closely with the staff, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway is to maximize the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely misplaced. There are myriad support systems in place, from staff members to fellow students, that can alleviate those fears. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life is possible even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
