**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and anticipation as I prepared to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Entering into the unknown felt intimidating, particularly for someone like me who has always leaned towards being more introverted. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a time of significant personal evolution, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at university’s onset was the quest to forge friendships. If you’re a potential student, this may be among your primary worries as well. I recall my inaugural day in student housing—I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, evading any interaction. However, as weeks went by, I slowly ventured outside my comfort zone, and I can now assertively claim that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had.
The essential takeaway? Dare to make that leap early on. Even if you harbor hesitations, numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings will aid you in connecting with others. Above all, be genuine—Imperial boasts a vibrant community, and you are sure to discover individuals aligned with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The shift from A-levels to university was considerable, with an even steeper transition from the first to the second term. At times, I felt swamped and questioned my capabilities, particularly when observing others engrossed in their studies.
What motivated me to persevere was the understanding that I wasn’t in this alone. If I had difficulty grasping a concept, it was likely that others were grappling with similar issues. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members. Understanding how to ask for help is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your introductory year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most comforting elements of my experience was the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff is genuinely invested in the well-being and academic achievements of students. They grasp the hurdles we navigate and keep the lines of communication open throughout the year.
Even though I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had reached out earlier. Serving as a year well-being representative enabled me to forge strong connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are various ways to interact with the faculty, and engaging can significantly enrich your university experience. My major takeaway from this? Leverage the support offered to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Final Thoughts
Upon reflection, this past year has illuminated that many of the fears and worries I harbored before starting university were often unfounded. With the extensive support network accessible—from faculty to fellow students—I was never truly isolated. More crucially, I learned how to balance academic demands with fully enjoying my university life.
For anyone who is on the verge of starting their own journey at Imperial, my straightforward advice is: embrace the challenges, reach out for support whenever necessary, and seize every opportunity. University is a period for personal growth, and with the appropriate mindset, it can transform into one of the most fulfilling times of your life.
