### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by nerves, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what the future would hold. I was ready to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been shy and introverted, entering this new phase of my life was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I perceive a path of personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant trials I encountered was the quest to make new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a major concern for you. I recall my first day in student housing—I felt so daunted by the idea of introducing myself that I spent the whole day in my room. However, fast forwarding to now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The crucial lesson I learned? Take that leap. Even if you feel anxious or uncertain, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more strenuous. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially upon observing others studying fervently.

What aided me in persevering was the realization that I wasn’t in this alone—many of my colleagues were enduring the same challenges. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether it’s from your classmates or your professors, asking for assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most fulfilling elements of my first year was getting to know the faculty within the Materials department. The professors and staff sincerely care about students’ welfare and academic progress. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and actively strive to assist us.

Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to form connections with staff, which proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My greatest takeaway? Utilize the support available—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that the fears and anxieties I harbored prior to starting university were largely unwarranted. With an effective support network—both from faculty and fellow students—those concerns became manageable. I’ve realized that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to balance academic challenges with personal enjoyment.

If you’re on the verge of beginning university, my advice is straightforward: embrace the journey, seek aid when necessary, and permit yourself to grow. Although the path may seem intimidating initially, it is filled with opportunities, friendships, and remarkable memories.
