### Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt as I prepared to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown was not something my shy, reserved nature was used to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I see it as a period of personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

#### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

One of the main hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be a significant worry for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just before classes started, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to leave and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has come to feel like a second family, and all it required was engaging in a little conversation with others who shared my situation.

So, what did I discover? Taking that initial step is always rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t stress—ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others will arise. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse student body, you are sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university was a substantial jump, and the volume of work only intensified as the year went on. It’s easy to feel swamped and doubt your capabilities, especially witnessing others working hard. However, I came to understand that everyone encounters similar challenges. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are puzzled too—so don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This became one of the most crucial lessons I absorbed during my first year. Whether reaching out to peers or asking for guidance from professors, requesting help is vital.

#### The Value of Support from Faculty

One of the highlights of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff truly care about student success and are always willing to discuss the obstacles we encounter. Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

At the year’s outset, I made a bold move and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to form connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Leverage the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Closing Thoughts

This year has illuminated that the worries I had before and while at university were often unfounded. With the right encouragement from staff and fellow students, obstacles become far easier to navigate. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never alone and that enjoying university life, even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines, is entirely possible.

Looking forward, I feel increasingly assured and excited about what lies ahead. If you’re on the brink of starting your university experience, embrace it, take those chances, and remember—you are not alone.
