### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, and entering the unknown felt intimidating for someone as naturally introverted and reserved as I was. Now, reflecting on my first academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and how do I view my current situation?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered in the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a major worry for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of encountering new individuals that I opted to stay in my room the entire day, too anxious to venture outside and introduce myself.
Flash forward to now, and I can assertively claim that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all of which began with casual chit-chat with others who were experiencing the same feelings as me.
So, what have I learned? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker gatherings and chances to connect with others. Above all, simply be yourself—Imperial is rich in diversity, and you are certain to encounter friends who share your interests.
#### Adjusting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course content. The transition from A-levels to higher education was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more rigorous. At times, witnessing others study with such efficacy made me doubt my own abilities.
What got me through this was the realization that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were grappling with it too. The most crucial lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether it was from peers or instructors.
#### The Significance of Seeking Assistance
This leads me to another vital insight: the exceptional support offered by the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely desires for students to thrive and is always receptive to feedback. They are aware of the hurdles we encounter and maintain active communication with us throughout the academic year.
Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One of my best choices was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge bonds with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the available support—you can never receive too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced before and even during the university journey was frequently unfounded. There are countless support systems in place—from staff to fellow students—to aid you in overcoming challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and that enjoying university life amidst the demands of exams and deadlines is entirely feasible.
If you are about to embark on your university adventure, seize the opportunity, take that plunge, and remember that help is always on hand when you need it.
