**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I geared up to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase felt daunting. Now, in hindsight, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and amazing experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I faced was the challenge of making new friends. If you are a prospective student, this may be one of your primary concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, I felt so daunted that I spent the entire day locked away in my room, far too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. Yet, as I reflect today, I can truthfully affirm that I’ve built some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has truly become a second home for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with those who were experiencing similar situations.

So, what’s the lesson here? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others await you. Above all, just remain true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Challenges

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university-level work was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. At times, I questioned my own abilities, especially as I observed others studying and felt I wasn’t measuring up.

What assisted me in this journey? Remembering that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I was struggling with a concept, it was likely that others were in the same situation. The essential takeaway here is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Asking for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most rewarding aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the caring and accessible faculty. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and conversation. Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I decided to take a leap and became a well-being representative for my year group. This responsibility enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My major conclusion? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Closing Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that the fears and worries I faced before commencing university were largely baseless. Numerous support systems are in place, from faculty to fellow students, to help you navigate challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I am never alone, and I’ve discovered how to balance academic demands with enjoying my university life.

If you are about to begin your journey at Imperial, my straightforward advice is: take the plunge, seek help when needed, and seize every opportunity that arises.
