**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. As a first-year student on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself stepping well beyond my comfort zone. Now, looking back, I can see a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my position today?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was making new connections. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, the thought of mingling was so daunting that I spent all day in my room, shying away from social interactions. Yet here I am today, and I can proudly say that I have forged some of the strongest friendships of my life.
The essential lesson? Take that initial plunge. Even if you’re not entirely comfortable, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others in similar circumstances. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial has a vibrant community, and you’re likely to encounter like-minded individuals.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and complexity of the course. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers. However, one of the most crucial lessons I learned is that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are others are too—so don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Requesting help from peers and faculty is one of the most important skills to hone in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
A highlight of my experience has been the extraordinary support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely cares about students’ success and is always receptive to feedback and dialogues regarding our issues. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key lesson? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the apprehensions I had prior to starting university were baseless. With the right backing from staff and fellow students, challenges become significantly easier to handle. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I am never truly alone, and balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university experience is indeed achievable.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, embrace the obstacles, seek help when required, and don’t hesitate to take that initial step. You may just surprise yourself with how much you evolve along the way.
