**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most significant challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day at the student residence, just prior to the start of the term, I spent an entire day in my room, feeling too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Nonetheless, as I sit here today, I can proudly affirm that I have forged some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced.
Imperial has become a second home to me, and all it required was a bit of light conversation with others in similar situations. My key takeaway? Take the plunge early on. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t worry—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new individuals. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you are sure to connect with those who share your interests and ideals.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels was evident, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more intense. It’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with assurance.
What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you are struggling to grasp a concept, many others likely are too. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching personnel. Learning to request help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty and Well-being Programs
A standout feature of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the remarkable support from the faculty. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and offering guidance.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had availed myself of it sooner. Early on, I made the bold choice to become a well-being representative for my cohort, which enabled me to establish strong connections with faculty. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and tutors can be immensely advantageous, and there are numerous opportunities to connect. My most significant lesson? Utilize the support available—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I have learned that many of the fears I harbored prior to starting university were unfounded. A wealth of support exists, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone and that enjoying university life is possible, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the leap, ask for assistance when needed, and savor the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before you realize it, you’ll be reminiscing about an extraordinary first year.
