### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat introverted, embarking on this new journey felt incredibly daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
#### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may also be one of your primary worries. On my initial day in student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I confined myself to my room all day, steering clear of social encounters.
Now, fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve met here have become like a second family. All it required was stepping outside my comfort limits and engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally nervous.
The most significant lesson I learned? Take that first step. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic—Imperial is home to a diverse array of individuals, and you are sure to connect with those who share your passions and principles.
#### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the extensive workload and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to second term was even more strenuous. At times, observing others study effectively made me question my own capabilities.
What encouraged me to persist was the understanding that I wasn’t facing my struggles alone. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were grappling with it too. The essential takeaway? Don’t be afraid to seek assistance. Whether it’s from peers or instructors, asking for help is one of the most critical skills to cultivate during your first year.
#### Valuing Support from Faculty
One of the aspects I appreciated the most was the remarkable support offered by the Materials Science department staff. They sincerely want students to thrive and are always willing to talk through any challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept in close contact with us, ensuring that we had access to the necessary resources.
Although I only took full advantage of pastoral support later in the year, I wished that I had engaged with it earlier. I also took the initiative to serve as a year well-being representative, which enabled me to form valuable connections with faculty members—something that proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and engaging with them can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize all the support available—there’s no such thing as too much help!
#### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt before starting university was largely unfounded. Numerous support systems exist, both from staff and fellow students, ready to assist with the transition. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly solitary. Amid the stress of exams and deadlines, I’ve found ways to enjoy my university experience.
If you are about to embark on your own journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: welcome the challenges, seek assistance when required, and seize every opportunity. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be reminiscing about a remarkable first year.
