**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and lack of clarity about what was to come. I was preparing to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, the thought of diving into a new environment was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and numerous enjoyable experiences! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. This is a common concern among many newcomers, and if you’re reading this as someone considering joining, it may be on your mind as well. On my first day of moving into accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with simple conversations with fellow students in similar circumstances.
So, what have I taken away from this experience? I’ve realized that taking that initial leap at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not feeling ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I’ve found that being true to yourself is the best approach. With such a variety of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who align with you.
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant transition from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second term posed even greater difficulties. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when observing others study and feeling like you’re lagging. However, one factor that helped me persevere was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something doesn’t click for you, it’s likely others are wrestling with it too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might well be the most vital lesson I acquired in my first year: seek assistance from both peers and faculty without reservation.
Regarding the faculty, the support from the Materials department is outstanding. The instructors and tutors genuinely care about your success and recognize the hurdles students encounter. They maintained open lines of communication with us throughout the year, addressing our queries and providing guidance. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had embraced it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My most significant lesson here is to take full advantage of the support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
All in all, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. There are so many support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, designed to mitigate those worries. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between having fun and managing the unavoidable stresses of exams and deadlines.
