**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introspective and quiet, the thought of immersing myself into this new phase was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the academic year, I recognize it as a time of profound personal development, obstacles overcome, and plenty of enjoyable moments. So, what specifically did I gain from this experience, and where do I stand now?
### Building Friendships: Conquering the First Challenge
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this is often their top concern when beginning university. On my first day at the student accommodation, just before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I have made some of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever known. My experience at Imperial has provided me with a second family, beginning with a handful of simple discussions with fellow students who were experiencing the same uncertainties.
So, what did I discover? I realized that taking the initiative early is essential. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is the most effective strategy. With such a varied cohort of students across the program and university, you’re likely to encounter others who align with your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Workload: A Steep Learning Experience
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being plunged into this atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you see peers studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind. However, here’s the essential point: everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re finding a topic difficult, others probably are too. The best action you can take is to seek help. This was arguably the most crucial lesson I grasped in my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to classmates and faculty for assistance.
### Assistance from the Faculty: A Vital Resource
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and appreciate the struggles students endure. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication channels, ensuring we felt supported. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a risk by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to form connections with faculty members, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and taking advantage of them can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary insight from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Welcoming the Journey
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was mostly misplaced. There are ample support networks available, from staff members to fellow students, to assist you in navigating the challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that it’s entirely feasible to enjoy university life, even while managing the demands of exams and deadlines.
By embracing the journey, taking risks, and seeking help whenever necessary, I’ve carved out my niche at Imperial—and I’m looking forward to what the future has in store.
