**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been shy and introverted, the prospect of fully immersing myself in this new chapter felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on my first academic year, I recognize a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the process of making new friends. For many, this can be one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be something you’re anxious about as well. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings. What did I learn? I learned that it’s always worthwhile to take that first step. If you’re not ready or feel uncomfortable immediately, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to meet people. Most importantly, I learned that the best approach is to be yourself. With so many different personalities throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Challenges
Another major hurdle was adapting to the workload and the higher complexity of the subject matter. There was indeed a noticeable shift from A-level studies, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.
What aided me through this process was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, chances are, others are struggling as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson I learned in my first year—always feel free to reach out to your classmates and the faculty when you require assistance.
### The Value of Support and Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the assistance from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors truly want you to thrive, and they comprehend the difficulties students confront. They maintain regular communication with us throughout the year, addressing our concerns and offering guidance. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I made the bold move of becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to connect with the staff more deeply, which has been invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway from this element of university life is to fully utilize the support systems available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
All in all, this year has shown me that the apprehensions I felt before and during university were often unfounded. An abundance of support exists, both from faculty and fellow students, to help you tackle any difficulties. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone, and I have learned how to balance enjoying my time with managing the inevitable stress of examinations and deadlines.
