### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Leaving my comfort zone was unfamiliar to me, but reflecting on the past year now, I recognize it was filled with development, obstacles, and an abundance of unforgettable moments. So, what have I gained, and how do I feel today?
#### Conquering the Fear of Socializing
One of the most intimidating parts of entering university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might relate to these feelings. On my first day in student housing, I felt so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, too shy to introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were feeling just as lost.
The most significant lesson I took away? Make your move early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, stay true to yourself—Imperial is populated with a diverse array of individuals, and you’re sure to find companions who share your interests.
#### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the extensive workload and the heightened difficulty of university-level material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even more considerable jump between the first and second terms. I often felt daunted and questioned my capabilities, particularly when observing others studying rigorously.
What helped me persevere was recognizing that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely others were too. My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or lecturers, asking for help is a critical skill to cultivate during your first year.
#### Assistance from Staff and Well-being Programs
One of the standout aspects of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and actively work with us to tackle any issues.
Though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I’d taken advantage of it earlier. In the beginning, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to forge solid relationships with staff members. Familiarizing myself with them proved to be immensely beneficial, and I urge every student to make use of the support that’s available. There’s no such thing as too much help!
#### Important Insights from My First Year
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. There are countless support systems in place, ranging from staff to fellow students, ready to assist you in navigating challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never alone and that it’s undoubtedly possible to relish university life while balancing academic pressures like exams and deadlines.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help, and embrace every moment. You’ll develop in ways you never imagined.
