**Finding a Home in London: My Journey and Reflections**

*By Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*

It has been nine months since I relocated to London, and while that may not seem overly lengthy, I have garnered a wealth of knowledge about residing in this lively city. London provides an extensive variety of accommodation choices, suitable for both students and working professionals. Whether you are in need of student housing or private rentals, there is an abundance of options available, including ensuite and shared bathrooms, private and shared rooms, studio flats, and house shares.

For home students, arranging an apartment viewing is quite simple. In contrast, international students can utilize platforms like Rightmove, Zoopla, and SpareRoom to survey potential living spaces online, verify available amenities, and evaluate proximity to public transportation.

### Choosing Where to Reside

As I was on the hunt for a place to live, I prioritized securing a rental in Central London to stay close to significant attractions, social centers, and, most importantly, the campus of Imperial College. The city is organized into six concentric zones, with zones one and two being the most central. The extensive public transport system—including the Underground (Tube), buses, and trains—facilitates travel between zones. However, traversing between zones can be expensive, with daily costs reaching as much as £5.25. To economize, I chose to walk shorter distances rather than relying on public transport whenever feasible. That said, options such as the Oyster card greatly lessen travel expenses for students.

In addition to the Tube, the London Overground and National Rail services extend beyond central London, servicing outer zones. Prices for these services differ depending on distance and the specific pricing policies of the train operator.

Residing in Central London tends to come with a high price tag due to its closeness to popular attractions. Fortunately, I was attending university with a friend, and we opted to share a room, which significantly lowered our rent. I also preferred intercollegiate student accommodations, as they offered a chance to interact with students from various backgrounds and of similar ages—something that can be more challenging to find in private rentals.

### Proximity to Essential Stores

For me, being near grocery stores was a crucial factor in selecting my accommodation. Some of the well-known supermarkets in London include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op, while more budget-conscious options like Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland provide affordable choices. Having essential stores like supermarkets and pharmacies within reach is incredibly convenient, especially during hectic times like exam periods.

### Discovering London’s Diverse Communities

Choosing a neighbourhood in London can be a daunting task. The city’s cultural richness is showcased through its various ethnic communities, each providing a distinct ambiance. Many international students gravitate towards areas that evoke a sense of familiarity from home.

For instance, Southall in West London boasts a substantial South Asian community, offering Indian eateries, grocery shops, and traditional clothing stores. Brixton in South London is celebrated for its Afro-Caribbean culture and vibrant music scene. Meanwhile, Chinatown, situated in the bustling heart of London’s West End, is a spirited area filled with Chinese restaurants, shops, and cultural festivals. These are merely a few instances of the numerous cultural enclaves that contribute to London’s dynamic character.

### Final Thoughts

The ideal place to live in London is contingent upon your individual preferences and requirements. Whether you emphasize affordability, closeness to university, or cultural resonance, the city has a vast array of housing alternatives. As you embark on your search for a new residence, embrace the diversity of London, explore its exceptional neighbourhoods, and savor the convenience and thrill of living in one of the world’s most extraordinary cities.
