### Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been quite introverted, entering this new setting was quite daunting. In hindsight, I can see that this year was filled with personal development, obstacles, and extraordinary experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

#### Conquering the Fear of Friendship

A significant challenge I encountered at the onset of university was the quest to make friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may share similar apprehensions. I vividly remember spending my entire first day in my accommodation, sheltered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. However, looking at where I am now, I can proudly say I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships in my life.

What was the key takeaway? Dare to take the plunge. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others await you. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a heterogeneous student population, you’re bound to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university proved to be yet another significant challenge, particularly concerning workload and complexity. The transition from the first to second term was especially stark. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities when you observe others studying rigorously. Yet, I came to realize that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, there’s a good chance others are too.

The best advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether you turn to your classmates or lecturers, pursuing support is one of the most essential skills to cultivate in your first year.

#### The Value of Community and Support

What stood out to me most was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely cares about the well-being and academic achievements of students. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year.

Although I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until much later, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. My involvement as a well-being representative allowed me to connect with staff in meaningful ways, which proved to be immensely helpful. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My most significant realization? Leverage the available support—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced before embarking on my university journey was mostly unfounded. Numerous support systems are in place, from staff to fellow students, to guide you through the transition. Most crucially, I learned that I am not alone. Amid the pressures of exams and deadlines, I discovered ways to savor my time at university, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything else.

If you’re about to start your journey at Imperial, embrace the challenges, seek support, and seize each opportunity. You might be amazed at how much you evolve along the way.
