### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year now, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where am I at now?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the most intimidating elements of beginning university was the task of forming new friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be one of your greatest worries as well. On the day I moved into student housing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to go outside and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had—both within my program and throughout the university.
Imperial has truly become a second home to me, and it all started with striking up casual conversations with others who were feeling just as apprehensive as I was. The crucial lesson I took away? Taking that initial step is always rewarding. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease right away, don’t stress—there will be ample social events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to meet those who align with your interests and principles.
#### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another noteworthy challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a discernible transition from A-levels, accompanied by an even steeper learning curve between the first and second terms. Being in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your self-assurance—you might observe others studying and feel as if you’re falling short.
What assisted me in navigating this was the awareness that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, there’s a good chance that others are grappling with it as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or from the instructional team. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the key skills you can acquire in your first year.
#### The Encouraging Staff and Support Systems
A highlight of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about students’ success and are cognizant of the challenges we encounter. They ensure ongoing communication with us throughout the year, making certain that our issues are acknowledged and resolved.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged with them earlier. At the year’s outset, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to forge connections with the faculty—an immensely rewarding experience. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your college experience. My most important takeaway? Make use of the resources available to you—you can never have too much support!
#### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has illustrated to me that many of the anxieties I held—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. With the extensive array of resources from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I discovered how to balance academic demands with enjoyment, making the best of my university life amidst the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
For anyone set to start their own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when needed, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. You’ll be amazed at your growth throughout the process.
