### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and questions about what was ahead. I was about to embark on my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Stepping outside my comfort zone was unfamiliar territory for me, but reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this concern might resonate with you as well. I vividly recall my first day settling into my student accommodation—I was so nervous that I spent the entire day isolating myself in my room, too anxious to go out and mingle.
Fast forward to now, and I’m proud to announce that I’ve cultivated some of my closest friendships to date. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with simple conversations with fellow students who shared my anxieties.
What was the most significant takeaway? Make the effort early. Even if you feel unsure, there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people. Most importantly, remember to be authentic—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you’ll surely find companions who resonate with you.
#### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the intensified difficulty of the material. The shift from A-levels to university proved to be substantial, and the progression from the first term to the second was more demanding than expected. It’s common to feel daunted when observing others study and start questioning your own capabilities.
What aided me through this challenging time? Reminding myself that everyone is grappling with the same circumstances. If something confounds you, it’s likely others are facing similar obstacles. The most important strategy is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is a vital skill to hone in your first year.
#### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
On the topic of support, one of the standout features of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial is the exceptional staff. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are always ready to engage in conversations regarding any academic or personal issues we encounter.
I wish I had utilized the pastoral support earlier in the year, as I only fully engaged with it later on. At the start of the year, I took a brave step and became a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish meaningful connections with faculty members. Building relationships with your lecturers and tutors can yield significant benefits, and there are numerous ways to accomplish this. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Concluding Reflections
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during my university journey—was largely unfounded. There exists a wealth of support through staff and fellow students to help you handle the challenges you face. Most importantly, I’ve realized I’m never truly alone, and it’s entirely possible to strike a balance between academic demands and a fulfilling university experience.
If you’re on the brink of starting your own university adventure, my recommendation is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when needed, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You will evolve in ways you never anticipated!
