### Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, ambiguity, and skepticism regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been shy and reserved, embarking on this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I realize it has been a year of personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of my foremost challenges in the beginning was establishing friendships. If you are an incoming student, this could be a significant worry for you as well. I recall my first day in student accommodation where I stayed in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The crucial lesson here? Take that plunge. Even if you may not feel prepared, there will be a myriad of ice-breaker events and chances to connect with individuals in similar situations. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you are likely to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the demands of university-level coursework and the heightened complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when I observed others studying and seemingly comprehending material more swiftly than I was.
What enabled me to push through was the realization that I wasn’t isolated—many of my peers were grappling with the same hurdles. The best advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, seeking help is essential. Everyone shares the same experiences, and teamwork can significantly influence your success.
#### The Significance of Finding Support
One of the most rewarding aspects of my initial year was the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff are genuinely invested in student success and are always willing to engage in conversations regarding academic and personal challenges. Although I didn’t fully embrace pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the outset, I took a brave step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge solid relationships with staff, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to interact with faculty, and engaging with them can enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—you cannot have too much assistance.
#### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has shown me that many of the fears I harbored before beginning university were unfounded. With appropriate support from staff and fellow students, obstacles become far more manageable. Most crucially, I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that maintaining a balance between academic challenges and a fulfilling university experience is indeed possible.
If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, my straightforward advice is: welcome the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and don’t hesitate to step beyond your comfort zone. You might be surprised by how much you evolve.
