**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and trepidation about what was to come. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been relatively shy and reserved, immersing myself in this new adventure felt daunting. Reflecting now, I can see a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a multitude of unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself at this point?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the beginning was establishing friendships. If you’re a future student, this might also be among your greatest concerns. On my first day at the student residence, the thought of meeting new individuals was so daunting that I spent the whole day in my room, evading social interactions. Nevertheless, sitting here today, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever encountered. Imperial has become a second home, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with others who found themselves in the same situation.

What have I learned? Taking that initial step at the onset of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry—there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse student population, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a stark difference from A-levels, and an even greater shift from the first term to the second. It’s easy to feel flooded with doubts about your abilities in the company of other diligent students. At times, I questioned my adequacy.

What aided me during this period? Reminding myself that everyone else was experiencing similar uncertainties. If I was struggling with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The most beneficial action I took was seeking assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most important skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Utilizing Support

This leads me to another vital lesson: the exceptional support offered by the department. The personnel in the Materials Science and Engineering department sincerely desire for students to thrive. They recognize the obstacles we encounter and sustain open communication throughout the year.

I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until later in the academic year, but I wish I had done it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.

### Closing Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before beginning university was largely unfounded. There are innumerable support systems available, from staff to fellow students, designed to assist you in navigating the transition. I’ve learned that I am never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance academic demands with enjoying my university life.

If you are about to commence your own journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that first step, reach out for help when you require it, and seize every opportunity that arises. You will grow in ways you never imagined, and before long, you’ll find yourself reflecting on an amazing first year.
