### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been somewhat introverted, stepping into this new phase felt quite daunting. Reflecting now, I recognise a year full of personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the primary obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a considerable worry for you. On my first day at student housing, the prospect of interacting with new individuals was so overwhelming that I stayed in my room throughout the day. However, as I write this today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some lifelong friendships. Imperial has transformed into my second family, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with others in similar circumstances.

What did I take away from this? The initial leap is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and avenues to meet others. Above all, be authentic—Imperial is populated by diverse people, and you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and moving from the first term to the second was especially taxing. It’s natural to feel inundated or to doubt yourself, particularly when observing others studying vigorously.

What aided me during this period? Reminding myself that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are grappling with it as well. The most prudent course of action is to seek help—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Asking for assistance is not a weakness; it’s a vital part of the learning process.

#### The Significance of Engaging with Faculty

One of the most enriching aspects of my first year was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely prioritise students’ welfare and academic achievement. They are aware of the hurdles we encounter and actively reach out to us to alleviate any worries.

Though I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my group. This position allowed me to foster connections with faculty, which turned out to be immensely helpful. There are various means to engage with professors and support staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the assistance available—you can never have too much support.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I recognise that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university was unwarranted. There exists a plethora of support systems, from staff to peers, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey in isolation. I’ve learned to manage academic demands while also relishing university life, and I’ve evolved in unexpected ways.

To anyone gearing up for their first year: welcome the challenges, seek assistance when required, and above all, savour the experience. University represents a time of personal growth, and every step—regardless of how intimidating—will contribute to your development into a more assured and capable individual.
