### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was poised to embark on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and reserved person, entering this new phase felt quite daunting. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize a period of personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most significant obstacles I faced at the beginning of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this concern may resonate with you as well. On my first day in student housing, I felt so overwhelmed that I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to meet new people. Yet, looking at my life today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known.

Imperial has truly become my second home, and it all began with simple conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings. My key takeaway? Take the initiative. Even if you feel unprepared, countless icebreaker activities and chances to connect with new individuals will be available. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial boasts a rich diversity of people, ensuring you will find those who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university studies was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s quite easy to feel swamped when you observe peers diving into study sessions and start doubting your own capabilities.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone experiences similar challenges. If you find yourself grappling with a topic, it’s likely that others are too. The most constructive action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Developing the skill to seek help is one of the most essential lessons you can learn during your first year.

#### The Value of Staff Support

A standout aspect of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely wish for student success and are always receptive to input. They recognize the obstacles we encounter and maintain regular communication to resolve our issues.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Initially, I embraced the opportunity to become a year well-being representative, which helped me cultivate connections with the staff. Building rapport with lecturers and tutors can be highly advantageous, and there are myriad ways to do so. My suggestion? Utilize all the resources available—you can never have too much support!

#### Major Takeaways from My First Year

Reflecting on this past year, it has become clear that the apprehension I felt before university was unfounded. There is a wealth of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students, to aid you in overcoming challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I am not solitary in this experience. In spite of the stress from exams and deadlines, I have found ways to savor my university journey and maximize my time at Imperial.

If you’re on the brink of starting university, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help, and cherish the adventure. You will evolve in ways you never anticipated, and soon enough, you will look back on a remarkable first year.
