**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and entering the unfamiliar was unfamiliar territory for my previously reserved and shy self. Reflecting now, I recognize a year that has been rich with personal development, numerous challenges, and a host of enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most intimidating facets of beginning university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate as one of your main apprehensions too. On my first day of moving into my living space, I was so daunted by the prospect of connecting with others that I spent the whole day isolating myself in my room, avoiding any social interaction. Nonetheless, as I write this today, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most important friendships that feel like family bonds.
So, what have I learned? I came to understand that initiating contact is always beneficial. Even when you don’t feel entirely prepared, there are numerous social events and avenues to meet new people. Above all, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another crucial challenge was acclimating to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even tougher. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others deeply engrossed in their studies.
What assisted me during this period was the insight that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a particular idea, others likely are as well. The most productive action you can take is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or instructors. Learning to request help is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire in your first year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
Regarding staff, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptionally supportive. They truly care about our success and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication lines open and offered invaluable advice.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wished I had accessed it sooner. One of my best choices was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously helpful. There are various ways to interact with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My biggest lesson? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the anxieties I held prior to entering university were unfounded. Support is perpetually available, whether from the faculty or fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that balancing academic demands with enjoyable activities is achievable.
To anyone on the brink of starting university: embrace the adventure, take the plunge, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and you may just discover a second family along the journey.
