**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the future. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, embracing this new chapter felt daunting. Looking back, I see a year packed with personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the significant hurdles I encountered early on was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be among your main worries as well. I recall my first day in student housing—I felt so daunted by the prospect of introducing myself that I spent the entire day sequestered in my room. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve cultivated some of the truest friendships of my life here, both in my course and throughout the university.
What did I glean from this experience? That first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be countless ice-breaker events and chances to interact with others. Above all, be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re likely to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another substantial challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of university-level studies. The transition from A-levels was evident, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more rigorous. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others studying and feeling I wasn’t keeping pace.
What aided me during this period? The realization that I wasn’t alone. If I was struggling with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The essential lesson is to request assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Seeking help is not a sign of inadequacy; it’s one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Connecting with Faculty
One of the standout elements of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the exceptional support from the teaching staff. They are genuinely invested in the success of students and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the academic year, they maintained regular communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing valuable guidance.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. However, I did take an early leap by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the support available—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I held prior to starting university were unfounded. There is a plethora of support available from both staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to manage academic pressures while also making the most of my university life.
For anyone about to begin their own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
