**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and doubts about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and modest, embarking on this fresh chapter felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A significant challenge I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be one of your main apprehensions as well. I remember arriving at my accommodation a few days prior to the term and spending a whole day inside my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, looking at where I am today, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had.
The essential lesson I discovered? Take the plunge. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be a multitude of ice-breaker activities and chances to meet others. And, above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another substantial obstacle was adjusting to the volume of work and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more challenging. At times, I questioned my abilities, particularly when I saw others engrossed in their studies and felt as though I was lagging behind.
What assisted me in persisting was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. If I grappled with a concept, it’s likely that others were experiencing similar struggles. The most important lesson I learned was the value of seeking assistance—either from classmates or faculty. Asking for help is not a manifestation of weakness but rather a vital component of thriving in university.
### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
One of the finest elements of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the outstanding support provided by the faculty. They truly wish for students to succeed and are always receptive to input and discussions regarding any issues we encounter. Even though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative and became a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My chief takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Final Thoughts
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the fears I harbored prior to starting university were misplaced. The encouragement from staff and fellow students made a significant impact. This year has shown me that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to navigate academic pressures while enjoying a fulfilling university life.
For anyone preparing to embark on their university path, my guidance is straightforward: seize the opportunities, seek support when necessary, and above all, savor the experience.
