**Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my initial year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I perceive it as a period filled with personal development, challenges, and numerous delightful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered was the task of making new friends. If you’re a potential student perusing this, you might resonate with that same feeling of unease. On my inaugural day of moving into accommodations, just days ahead of the term, I spent a full day retreating in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can affirm that I have formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who genuinely feel like family.

What did I realize? Taking that first step is invariably rewarding. Even when you may not feel completely prepared, fear not—there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and opportunities to connect with new people. Most crucially, be true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands

Another major challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a remarkable leap from A-levels, with an even sharper learning curve from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities, especially when you observe others immersed in their studies.

What aided me during this time was the understanding that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re finding a concept tough, chances are others are struggling too. The most effective action you can take is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for support is one of the most valuable lessons you can glean during your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting aspects of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials department staff. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are always approachable regarding any issues we may encounter. Although I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so from the beginning.

At the year’s start, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university life. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available—you can never have an excess of assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Looking back, this year has illuminated that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. There are myriad support systems in place, from staff to fellow students, designed to facilitate the transition. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never alone and that it is feasible to manage academic challenges while also enjoying a rewarding university experience.

If you’re on the verge of commencing your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You won’t regret it.
