**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who previously leaned towards being shy and introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. This is a common concern for many newcomers, and I was certainly among them. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, as weeks progressed, I slowly forged friendships that turned out to be some of the most enduring I’ve ever had.

Looking back, I understand that taking the initial step—regardless of how minor—is crucial. If you’re feeling anxious about meeting new individuals, fear not! Numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to connect exist. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of university-level education. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more taxing. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others studying fervently.

What aided me during this period was the realization that I wasn’t alone—many of my peers were grappling with similar difficulties. If there’s something you don’t grasp, it’s likely that others are perplexed as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance, whether from fellow students or instructors. Learning to seek help is one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Assistance from Faculty

One of the most comforting aspects of my course has been the exceptional support from the teaching staff. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and discussions regarding any hurdles we face.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the start, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and tutors can be immensely advantageous, and there are myriad ways to do so. My key takeaway? Take full advantage of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, I’ve realized that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior and during university—were unfounded. Support is always accessible, whether from faculty or fellow students. Most crucially, I’ve learned that it is possible to reconcile academic pressures with enjoyment.

If you’re about to embark on your university journey and feeling anxious, remember that you’re not alone. Seize the opportunities, seek support when necessary, and above all, savor the journey!
