**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and a touch of fear regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been somewhat introverted and quiet, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and countless unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gathered, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxieties of Making Connections
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an upcoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day at student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of meeting new individuals that I spent the entire day secluded in my room, steering clear of social engagement. However, zooming ahead to now, I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.
The vital takeaway? Take a chance and put yourself out there. If you don’t feel prepared at the beginning, that’s perfectly fine—there will be countless icebreaker sessions and occasions to connect with others. Most crucially, be true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic pressures of university life. The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was no small feat, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I noticed others engaged in their studies and appearing more self-assured.
What guided me through this was the realization that everyone encounters difficulties at some stage. If you’re struggling with material, it’s likely that others are too. The best approach is to ask for assistance—whether from peers or instructors. Learning to seek help is among the most invaluable skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
One of the greatest surprises for me was the level of support provided by the Materials Science faculty. The professors genuinely desire for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback. They recognize the challenges students face and actively endeavor to tackle them.
Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into it sooner. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This ended up being immensely rewarding. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and engaging with them can greatly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of all the support at your disposal—you can never have excessive assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has enlightened me to the fact that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unwarranted. With the right support—from both staff and fellow students—those anxieties can diminish. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to navigate academic pressures while enjoying university life.
For anyone about to embark on their university adventure: embrace the hurdles, seek support when needed, and above all, be yourself. You will find your niche, just as I have.
