### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Transitioning from my naturally shy demeanor into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects of entering university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this could be one of your primary concerns as well. On my first day at my student residence, just before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and make introductions. Yet today, I can assert with confidence that I have found some incredible friends. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with a little small talk with others who were feeling just as intimidated as I was.
So, what’s the lesson? Taking that initial leap is always beneficial. If you don’t feel ready or at ease immediately, don’t worry—plenty of icebreaker events and chances to meet others will arise. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student demographic, it’s inevitable you’ll encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.
#### Adapting to Academic Rigors
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demands of the workload and the intensified complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s simple to become overwhelmed by seeing others study and begin to doubt your own skills.
What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find a concept challenging, likely others are too. The most constructive action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or professors. Developing the ability to ask for help is one of the most valuable skills you can cultivate during your first year.
#### Assistance from Faculty and Pastoral Services
One aspect that particularly impressed me was the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty is genuinely invested in the success of students and well aware of the difficulties we encounter. They keep the lines of communication open throughout the academic year and are always ready to assist.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care options until later on, I wish I had engaged with them sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by serving as a year well-being representative. This position helped me forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway? Take advantage of the available support—you can never receive too much help!
#### Concluding Thoughts
As I reflect on this past year, I realize that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming various challenges. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that it’s entirely feasible to manage academic pressures while enjoying a fulfilling university experience.
For those about to embark on their university journey: take that leap, ask for assistance, and seize every opportunity that presents itself. You won’t regret it.
