**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. I was about to start my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had typically been introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the year, I can see it has been marked by significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a primary concern for you as well. I remember arriving at my accommodations a few days before classes began, spending an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present day, and I can confidently share that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family within Imperial, and it all began with stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with others in similar situations.

What did I take away from this? First, it’s always beneficial to take that first step. Regardless of whether you feel prepared, there will be ample ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. Second, the most important thing is to be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was becoming accustomed to the volume of work and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was clearly noticeable, with an even steeper change between the first and second terms. This shift didn’t always boost my self-esteem—I frequently caught myself measuring my progress against others and doubting my capabilities.

What assisted me during this period was the understanding that everyone faced similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others did too. The most crucial lesson I absorbed was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, asking for help proved to be immensely beneficial.

### The Value of Staff Support

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly desire for students to thrive and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us and offered invaluable advice.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the year’s beginning, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative. This position allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely helpful. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. My key takeaway? Take advantage of the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. There exist numerous support systems, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to manage academic pressures while also savoring my university experience.

To anyone about to embark on their personal university adventure: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You will grow in ways you never anticipated.
