### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing beyond my comfort zone was foreign to me, but reflecting now, I notice a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

#### Conquering the Challenges of Making Connections

A major challenge I encountered at the outset was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could also be a primary worry for you. I recall my first day in student housing spent in my room, hesitant to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, as the months rolled on, I found myself among some of the closest friends I’ve ever made.

The essential takeaway? Take the plunge. Even if you’re feeling anxious or uncertain, there are plenty of icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, remain true to yourself—Imperial’s community is diverse, and you’re likely to find others with similar interests and values.

#### Adapting to the Academic Load

Another key challenge was adjusting to the demands of the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The shift from A-levels was distinctly evident, and the transition between the first and the second term proved even more daunting. At times, I felt inundated and questioned my own abilities, particularly when I noticed peers studying vigorously.

What assisted me through this? Realizing I was not alone. If you’re grappling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are facing similar challenges. The best strategy is to reach out for assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help early is among the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

#### Assistance from Faculty and Pastoral Care

A standout aspect of my time here has been the tremendous support from the Materials department staff. They genuinely prioritize students’ welfare and are continually receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral care until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.

In the beginning, I took initiative by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role facilitated connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My greatest insight? Leverage the support that’s there for you—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the worries I had prior to beginning university were unfounded. With appropriate backing from staff and fellow students, I was able to face challenges and evolve both academically and personally. Most importantly, I’ve realized that amid the stress of exams and deadlines, enjoyment of the journey is still achievable.

If you are on the brink of starting university, my guidance is straightforward: welcome the experience, seek help when necessary, and keep in mind that you are not alone.
