**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and worry about what was to come. I was on the cusp of starting my first year as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my once-timid and introverted self was used to. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, difficulties, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the foremost obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your largest worries as well. On my first day in student housing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever enjoyed—individuals who have become like a second family to me.
What did I gain from this experience? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker events and social engagements are available to help you bond with others. Most importantly, just be your genuine self. With such a varied student community, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous workload and heightened complexity of the course content. The leap from A-levels was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated amid diligent peers, but I learned a crucial lesson: everyone faces similar hurdles. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are experiencing the same.
What’s the best way to tackle this? Seek assistance. This is among the most essential skills to cultivate in your first year. Whether reaching out to classmates or asking for advice from faculty, don’t hesitate to pose questions.
### The Value of Faculty Support
On the topic of faculty, the teaching team in the Materials department is outstanding. They genuinely wish for students to excel and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they kept in regular communication with us, addressing issues and offering support.
I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not having engaged sooner. A pivotal choice I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of my original apprehensions were unwarranted. The encouragement from staff and fellow students was transformative. I’ve learned that I am never entirely alone, and I’ve figured out how to juggle academic demands with enjoyment.
If you’re about to begin university and feeling anxious, remember that’s entirely normal. Embrace the challenges, reach out for support as necessary, and above all, savor the journey.
