### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was a bundle of nerves, uncertainty, and excitement as I geared up to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat reserved, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might resonate with you as well. I recall spending my initial day in student housing sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, as the months unfolded, I developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The essential takeaway? Take the plunge. Even if you feel uncertain, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others in similar circumstances. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is home to a variety of individuals, and you’re sure to find companions with similar interests.

#### Adapting to the Academic Challenges

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heavy workload and the higher complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s tempting to compare yourself to others and feel like you’re lagging behind, but I soon discovered that everyone faces difficulties at some point.

The best approach to cope? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or instructors, pursuing help is essential. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are others are too. Learning to reach out for support early on can greatly enhance your academic journey.

#### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most enriching aspects of my first year was the backing from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about students’ well-being and academic achievements. They recognize the obstacles we encounter and maintain open lines of communication throughout the academic year.

Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Acting as a year well-being representative allowed me to link up with faculty members, which proved immensely helpful. There are myriad ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the support offered—there’s no such thing as too much help!

#### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, my first year at Imperial has illuminated the fact that the fears and worries I harbored prior to starting university were often unfounded. With ample support from both staff and fellow students, I managed to navigate challenges and enjoy my experiences, even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never alone on this journey.

If you’re on the verge of beginning university, embrace the experience, take risks, and remember that help is always within reach when you need it.
