### Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase felt daunting. In retrospect, I realize that it was a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what have I discovered, and how do I feel today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered initially was the challenge of establishing friendships. If you’re an upcoming student, this may also be a significant worry for you. On my first day in my student residence, I felt so overwhelmed that I spent the entire day alone in my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone. However, reflecting on this now, I can boldly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has truly become a second home, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in light conversations with others experiencing the same feelings.
So, what took away from this experience? Making that initial move is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself—Imperial is brimming with diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find friends with similar interests.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another substantial obstacle was adjusting to the academic pressures and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even tougher. At times, I questioned my abilities, particularly when I observed others studying fervently.
What aided me during this period was the realization that we were all navigating similar challenges. If I didn’t grasp a concept, there was a good chance that others were struggling as well. The most valuable lesson was learning to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Asking for help is not an indication of weakness; it’s among the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.
#### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most comforting aspects of my course has been the remarkable support from the teaching staff. They genuinely care about student success and are aware of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing mentorship.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. One of the smartest decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be immensely helpful. There are numerous avenues to connect with lecturers and tutors, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the resources available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt before and during my time at university was often unfounded. There are abundant support systems in place, from staff to fellow students, to guide you through the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone. Even amidst the stresses of examinations and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to enjoy my time at Imperial, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything.
If you’re about to embark on your university journey, my advice is straightforward: take that plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace the path ahead. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated.
