### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had been rather shy and withdrawn in the past, embarking on this new journey was intimidating. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it as a period of substantial personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered initially was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might relate to that same unease. I vividly recall my first day moving into student housing—I spent an entire day isolated in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with peers facing similar challenges.
So, what did I take away from this experience? That first step is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with new faces. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the heightened difficulty of material. The leap from A-levels to university level was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your abilities, particularly when you observe others studying and seemingly mastering concepts more rapidly.
What facilitated my journey was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If a topic perplexes you, there’s a good chance it confounds others as well. The crucial part is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most beneficial skills you’ll cultivate in your first year.
#### The Role of Support from Faculty
One of the most comforting aspects of my experience has been the remarkable support from the teaching personnel. The professors and academic staff are genuinely invested in student success and comprehend the challenges we encounter. They are always receptive to feedback and eager to assist.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. At the onset, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously worthwhile. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My chief lesson? Leverage the support around you—you can never have too much assistance.
#### concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the nerves and apprehensions I harbored prior to beginning university were largely unfounded. An abundance of support exists, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. Most importantly, I’ve understood that I’m never truly alone.
This year has equipped me with the skills to balance academic demands with personal enjoyment, and I’m eager to discover what the coming years have in store. If you’re on the cusp of starting university, immerse yourself in the experience, embrace risks, and don’t hesitate to seek help—you’ll be amazed at the growth you experience.
