**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with apprehension, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my freshman year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted and cautious, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting back, I can now appreciate a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. But what insights have I gained, and how do I assess my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making

One of the principal hurdles I encountered early on was the challenge of befriending others. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your primary worries. On my initial day at my student accommodation, right before the semester kicked off, I felt so daunted that I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to reach out to anyone else.

Now, looking at the present, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating conversations with fellow students who were in a similar position.

So, what has this journey taught me? The most advantageous action you can take at the beginning of the year is to make that first move. If you’re not yet prepared, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet new faces. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Trials

Another significant challenge was becoming accustomed to the heavy workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competence, particularly when you observe others studying fervently.

What supported me through this period was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find a topic confusing, chances are you’re not alone in that sentiment. The crucial part is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or your instructors. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most valuable lessons one can gain in their first year.

### The Necessity of Support from Faculty

One of the most comforting elements of my journey has been the exceptional backing from the department staff. They truly desire for students to excel and are consistently receptive to feedback and concerns. Even though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by volunteering as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with lecturers and support personnel, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the help that’s accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety and doubts I experienced prior to entering university were largely unfounded. There are numerous support structures available, from academic staff to fellow students, which means no one has to navigate the journey alone. Most importantly, I’ve gained insights into balancing academic responsibilities with personal enjoyment, maximizing my university experience.

If you’re preparing to embark on your own journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that initial step, reach out for help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
