### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the cusp of beginning my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat reserved, immersing myself in a completely new setting was intimidating. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a time filled with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A significant challenge I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student, this may also be a concern for you. I recall my first day moving into my dorm—I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I have ever had.
Imperial has turned into a second home, and all it required was stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging in small conversations with others experiencing similar feelings. My main takeaway? Take that bold step at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With a diverse student population, you’re sure to find others who share your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was profound, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel inundated when witnessing others study and start to question your own capabilities.
What benefited me greatly was understanding that everyone faces struggles at some stage. If you find something challenging, it’s likely that others are too. The best approach is to seek help—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to seek assistance is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
#### The Value of Staff Support
Regarding support, the Materials Science department staff are exceptional. They truly want students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, addressing our queries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to engage with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support available—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
#### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that many of the worries I held before starting university were unfounded. There is a wealth of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance academic responsibilities with enjoyment.
For anyone gearing up to start their university journey—welcome the challenges, seek support when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about an extraordinary first year, just as I am now.
