### Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and cautious, entering this fresh chapter seemed daunting. Now, upon reflection, I recognize that the year was characterized by personal development, trials, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the foremost challenges I encountered right away was the effort to forge friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so overwhelmed that I remained in my room the entire day, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone else. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life.

The essential takeaway? Take risks. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to facilitate connections with those around you. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a vibrant and diverse student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university coursework was another significant challenge. The increase in workload was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. At times, I questioned whether I was keeping pace, particularly when I observed others studying with ease.

What aided me during this period? Recognizing that I was not by myself. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same difficulties. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Learning to pursue support is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most gratifying elements of my inaugural year was connecting with the academic staff. The faculty in the Materials department are remarkably supportive and earnestly desire for students to thrive. They are aware of the challenges we encounter and maintain open dialogue throughout the academic year.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral care until later on, I wish I had reached out sooner. One of the finest decisions I made was taking on the role of a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to establish rapport with faculty, which turned out to be immensely valuable. Whether through student representative roles or office hours, connecting with faculty can significantly enhance your university journey.

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this past year has illustrated that many of my initial anxieties were baseless. The support frameworks available—both from staff and fellow students—are there to assist. I’ve discovered that I am never truly isolated and that it’s feasible to manage academic challenges while enjoying a fulfilling university life.

If you’re on the cusp of embarking on your own adventure, my simple guidance is: take the risk, ask for assistance when needed, and fully embrace every opportunity that presents itself.
