**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. As a first-year student preparing to commence my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself entering a completely new environment. Being naturally shy and introverted made this transition feel quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One significant obstacle I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re contemplating this experience, you may share similar concerns. I vividly recall my first day in student housing—I felt so daunted that I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet anyone.

Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most valuable friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with others who were experiencing the same challenges. My most important lesson? Take that initial step at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events designed to facilitate connections. Above all, just be yourself—Imperial is teeming with a variety of individuals, and you are sure to meet those who share your passions.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the increased volume of work and the elevated difficulty level of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels was noticeable, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more significant. It wasn’t always easy to maintain confidence, especially upon witnessing peers studying intensively while I felt like I was lagging behind.

What assisted me through this period was acknowledging that everyone was navigating similar struggles. If I was confused about a topic, it’s likely that others were too. The most crucial lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Developing the skill to seek support is invaluable during your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

On the topic of support, one of the most comforting aspects of my program has been the outstanding staff. They truly care about student success and comprehend the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, making sure our voices were heard.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year wellbeing representative. This position allowed me to engage closely with staff members, which turned out to be immensely helpful. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems in place—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unfounded. An abundance of support exists, both from faculty and fellow students, to help address any issues that arise. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I am never truly alone. Amidst the demands of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to relish my university journey, and I wouldn’t exchange it for anything.

If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You will evolve in ways you never anticipated.
