**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was preparing to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing out of my comfort zone was not something my previously shy and reserved personality was used to. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize it has been packed with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the significant hurdles I encountered was forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in the student accommodation, just before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day locked away in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I write this now, I can proudly say that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of small talk with others in the same boat.

So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always a worthwhile endeavor. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there will be plenty of icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, I discovered that the best thing you can be is your true self. With such a rich variety of individuals in the student body, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Load

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more daunting. It’s all too easy to feel inundated and question your own capabilities, especially when observing others studying and appearing to have everything under control.

What assisted me in navigating this was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial element is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Mastering the ability to ask for help is one of the most invaluable skills you can gain during your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

Speaking of support, the teaching faculty within the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are mindful of the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year and are always ready to assist.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a plunge and became a year wellbeing representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My main lesson? Make the most of the support that’s at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Looking back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during my university experience was quite often unwarranted. There are countless support structures in place, from staff to fellow students, which ensure that no one has to face challenges alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to juggle academic pressures while savoring my time at university.

If you’re on the verge of starting your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the leap, be your authentic self, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You might be surprised at how much you evolve throughout the journey.
