**Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. As someone who had always been somewhat shy and reserved, entering this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the primary challenges I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern as well. On my first day at the student residence—before any classes had commenced—I spent an entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. However, fast forward to today, and I can proudly state I’ve found some of the best friends I could ask for.
Imperial has truly become my second home, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with fellow students in similar situations. My key takeaway? Take that plunge at the start of the year. If you’re feeling unsure, don’t fret—there will be countless ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to discover people who share your interests and beliefs.
### Adapting to Academic Challenges
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level subjects. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe your peers studying, but the reality is, everyone is navigating the same waters.
The best piece of advice I can provide? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or your lecturers, reaching out for support is essential. If you are grappling with a particular concept, it’s likely others are as well. Learning to ask for help was one of the most beneficial skills I acquired throughout my first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
One of the most remarkable elements of my experience has been the outstanding support from the academic staff. The instructors and tutors in the Materials department are genuinely invested in the success of their students. They recognize the challenges we encounter and maintain an open dialogue throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Serving as a year well-being representative allowed me to foster relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary lesson here? Make the most of the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back, this year has revealed to me that the fears and worries I had prior to starting university were mostly unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you through the transition. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never alone and that it’s feasible to juggle academic pressures while enjoying a fulfilling university experience.
